The biggest challenge when conceiving the SunSquare canopy for the outdoors was controlling the sail in strong gusts of wind. The designers got around this using two methods. A spring mechanism, the new compensator, pretensions the sail; during gusts, the sail automatically flexes on its springs or its compensator without overloading the support stanchions. When the built-in anemometer measures wind speeds in excess of 50 km/h, a sensor actions the motor and the electric awning retracts the sail automatically. SunSquare's automatic sun-awning sail system is patent protected worldwide.
